Some have probably already given up, some thought that this day would never arrive, but the fact is that Neteller has begun this week distributing the money from the thousands of frozen US accounts. As a reminder, the Isle of Man based e-wallet decided last January to freeze all the American players’ accounts, following the legislation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which basically made it impossible for Americans to play at online casino sites. Now, after almost 9 months and following a settlement with the US authorities, Neteller has begun handing out more than $90 million that belonged to thousands of US players.
In addition of “unfreezing” all of the US account and as a part of the settlement reached, the company will have to pull out of the US market and pay an enormous penalty of $136 million. Even though some of the frozen accounts consisted of only dozens or hundreds of dollars, several online casino players stated that they had account balances exceeding the $70,000. According to the reports, one remarkable account even had $800,000 in it, supposedly belonging to a professional poker player whose winnings were paid to Neteller.
There’s no doubt that this latest agreement is excellent news for all online casino players who had their money placed at a Neteller account, as they will finally be able to see their money again. Nevertheless, the battle for an open, legalized online gambling world is still far from over, although everyone at the industry hopes that in that case too we will end up foreseeing a happy end.
