Even though some politicians at Washington try to make you think the opposite, online poker has long ceased to be a game played only by a minority. In fact, it seems as it’s quickly becoming one of the most popular online gambling ever, with millions of people playing it each day. Even after the legislation of the Unlawful Internet Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which basically banned online casinos and poker rooms, everything shows that online poker is only becoming more and more popular. If we needed another confirmation, it was published this week that the Poker Players’ Alliance has reached the remarkable sum of 500,000 members - a huge growth when comparing it to only 140,000 only three months ago.
For those of you who are not familiar with it, the Poker Players Alliance is a nonprofit membership organization comprised of poker players from around the United States who have joined together to speak with one voice to promote the game, ensure its integrity, and protect poker players' rights. Lately, they have been fighting against the UIGEA, claiming that poker and online poker are games of skill and shouldn’t be treated as other casino games.
Many online poker players think that this sudden growth and popularization came thanks to appointment of former Senator Alfonse D'Amato as the chairman of the organization. D’Amato has already declared earlier this year that his goal is to reach one millions members and it certainly seems that he’s going the right way. It’s true, more members don’t guarantee anything, but they certainly mean much more power when trying to confront the anti-online poker lobbyists at Washington Related News:
